The Alaska Highway 12 Day Trip Itinerary [Part 1]

Here was the premise: Pack our two kids (ages 2 and 5) into our 2008 Toyota Tundra and begin a 3,700 mile trip from Seattle up to Alaska. We headed north through British Columbia until we hit Dawson Creek, the historic start of the famed Alaska Highway. Later, we continued driving northeast into Alaska, stopping in Fairbanks briefly before joining the Dalton Highway, the stretch of road that follows the Alaska (oil) Pipeline up to Deadhorse and Prudhoe Bay. Following our foray

A Long Weekend in Tofino, Vancouver Island, Canada

Spring here upon us in the Pacific Northwest and we are feeling a little bit itchy for some outdoor time. It’d been a while since we ventured up to Canada so we pulled out our passports and headed north. <?php echo do_shortcode(”)?> Vancouver Island is just a short hop away from those of us living in Washington State. There are several ways for us to enter Canada, the cheapest for us was to cross the border at Peace Arch (on

Iceland 5 Day Itinerary with Kids

We just got back from a trip to Scandinavia with the kids. Whoa nelly, Iceland is incredible. Out-of-this-world stunning natural beauty in it’s most primal forms: rock, ice, water, and fire. Halfway through our 8-hr flight home, Chris was already plotting a return trip. Who knew that a barren chunk of ground could be so captivating. Our itinerary included a direct flight from Seattle to Reykjavik, Iceland, with a 1.5 year-old and a four year-old. Ugh. Let’s just say that

Peru Family Vacation: Itinerary and Route Map

Two Weeks in Peru with a Toddler The white walls of Arequipa, the high deserts of the Altiplano, and the tropical mountains of Machu Picchu and the Sacred Valley.  October 2012 We took our son to Peru when he was 20 months old. Our parents (his grandparents) were not entirely enthusiastic about their only grandchild galavanting off to South America and we were worried about the long plane ride from Seattle to Areiquipa, Peru (with stopovers in Los Angeles, Miami, and Lima). We

New Zealand: 9 Day North Island Road Trip

Editor’s note: While we typically try to focus on family-friendly trips here on Terra Trekkers, this was a vacation we took that was deliciously free from children. My husband and I left our toddler son home with his grandparents while we soaked up the sun in Fiji and New Zealand in November 2013. I was seven months pregnant with our daughter Emma so it wasn’t exactly a wild vacation in the land that claims to have invented extreme sports, but it

New Zealand Road Trip: Rotorua, Geothermal Wonderland

This post in part of our New Zealand North Island 9-Day Road Trip series. We spent two nights in Rotorua. There are many activities available in this lakeside town, ranging from zorbing (rolling down a hill in an inflatable ball) to sheep shearing. Prepare yourself for some serious sulfur smells though – there are odoriferous thermal pools throughout the entire area. First Up: Rainbow Springs Wildlife Park with the optional kiwi nursery tour (which is definitely worth the extra $, by the way). We

Introducing: Terra Trekkers Truck Camping

Here at Terra Trekkers we’ve added a new mode of transportation: a Four Wheel Camper (Hawk shell version).   This is a pop-up version: when in camp, the tops raises like a tent, allowing for a few additional feet of headroom. In the photo above, the top is lowered for transporting, allowing for a smaller profile and increased gas mileage. We picked her up in Oregon last weekend and did a mini road trip out to the Coast before heading back

Peru Family Vacation: Arequipa

This post is part of our Two Weeks in Peru with a Toddler series. The Introduction, route map, and itinerary can be found here.    Fly from Lima to Arequipa, Peru Arequipa is known as La Ciudad Blanca (the White City), thanks to the light-colored volcanic stone of which many buildings in the old city are constructed. Arequipa sits at 7,638 above sea level and is ringed by the high desert volcanic cones of the Andes Mountains to the north and

Canada: Banff and Jasper National Parks Road Trip

Summer is here and thus it is time for Team J to hit the road. This vacation has been in the works for a while; I made the reservations back in February and then kind of forgot about it. Life has a way of creeping up and getting hectic, doesn’t it? Anyway, after a mad scramble last week to wrap up the few final details, we piled into a rented minivan (poor little Pepe the prius was too small for
